Unerwünscht Kindheits- und Jugenderinnerungen eines jüdischen Kippenheimers

Memoirs of a German Jew, born in 1930 in Kippenheim. Pp. 67-89 discuss the Nazi period. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, Maier's father was arrested, interned in Dachau, and then released. The family began to consider emigration to the USA, but without success; after their application for a visa, they remained without a car, radio, or telephone. In October 1940 Maier was deported with his parents and brother to Gurs. Having been registered since 1938 for emigration to the U.S., they were released from Gurs in 1941 and succeeded in leaving for New York via Marseille in the last minute.
