Inside Asia
Here is a companion volume to John Gunther's famous classic, Inside Europe, Now he describes the continent of mystery, giving all the facts the average Western reader wants to know about Asia. Here are the events, personalities and forces which are changing the face of Asia today. Here is the background history without the current happenings cannot be understood. Like Inside Europe, this book is built on a thread of personality, and treats of such key figures as the Emperor of Japan, Chiang Kai-shek, the Soong sisters, Mauel Quezon, Gandhi, Aga Khan, the Shah of Persia, Dr. Weizmann, and others. It covers everything that is happening in the Orient: shows how actually the problems of Asia concern the rest of the world. Sketched with revealing clarity are both old and new imperialisms of Asia: the Dutch in the East Indies, the French in Indo-China, the Americans in the Philippines, the Japanese in Manchukuo, and China, and the British almost everywhere. Beginning with Japan, Mr. Gunther continues with Manchukuo; touches on Asiatic Russia; proceeds to China; progresses downward to the Philippines, Malaya and Siam; turns westward to the gigantic complex of India, inspects Iran, Iraq, and the Middle East; and concludes in the Near East and Palestine. The preparation of this book covered a period of several years. Nearly a year was spent traveling throughout the East, a total of about 30 000 miles, and during 1937 and 1938 Mr. Gunther visited every important place he has written about except Saudi Arabia and the Mongolias, talking with leading political figures everywhere. Previously he had been in the Near East four times correspondent for the Chicago Daily News. The result of his investigation is a book as enlightening and urgently important as Inside Europe
