Powerful practice : a model for authentic occupational therapy

Anne G. Fisher (Autore), Abbey Marterella (Autore)
"Powerful practice: a model for authentic occupational therapy by Anne G. Fisher and Abbey Marterella is indeed a powerful textbook! I read this text voraciously and found ever chapter to challenge the way I view occupation and the occupational therapy process. The reader-centered, occupation-centered, client-centered, and true top-down focus makes this text refreshing and challenging to even the seasoned clinician. That being said, the authors skillfully make challenging concepts easy to grasp. The occupational therapy intervention process model (PTIPM) and the transactional model of occupation serve as the foundation for the concepts outlined in the text. The reader is skillfulled guided through the occupational therapy evaluation and goal-setting process, exposed to several types of occupational therapy interventions (adaptive occupation, occupation-focused educational programs, acquisitional occupation, restorative occupation, etc.), and led through the reevaluation process. Multiple case examples from diverse areas of practice are used to illustrate concepts and processes. This text includes a chapter that describes the case of Rachel and Stephen. Rachel is an occupational therapist working on an inpatient rehabilitation unit and Stephen recently survived a right-sided stroke. The case pulls no punches in describing the multiple everyday challenges of working on a medically-based unit and maintaining a client-centered and occupation-centered approach.By the end of this text and chapter, I have no doubt readers will have a brand new lens to view occupation and their own practices. The concepts in this text will no doubt serve as a change agent for current practice patterns. One of my favourite elements of this text is the inclusion of questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. As someone who has been practicing for 30 years, I can happily report that they meet their intended purpose. I look forward to using these provocative questions in the classroom to stimulate discussion. This text has the potential for broad readership. I can easily see this text being adopted as a curriculum text. Use in our occupational therapy programs will groom our new graduates to pracice authentic occupational therapy emphasizing our distinct value. For the seasoned therapist who may or may not be using an occupation-centered approach, it will serve as motivator to (finally) throw out the pegs, embrace our roots, and practice authentic occupational therapy. Most importantly, our clients will reap the true benefits of this text. As occupational therapists 'harness the power of occupation and practice in an authentic manner', there is no doubt that our client's occupational engagement will be enhanced and improved. In summary powerful practice a model for authentic occupational therapy is a slot of occupational therapy adrenaline. On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to thank Anne G. Fisher and Abbey Marterella for this gift to our profession." -- Foreword
