Angola: Language Situation

R. Halme
More than 30 Bantu languages are spoken in Angola. The majority of Angolans speak one of these languages as their mother tongue. The languages with greatest number of speakers are Umbundu, Loanda Mbundu or Kimbundu, Kongo, Chokwe, Ngangela (a cover term for a cluster of languages spoken in southeastern Angola) and Kwanyama. These national languages have been planned to be implemented in the primary education system in 2005. Portuguese is the sole official language and it is the lingua franca of Angola. Khoisan languages have a relatively small number of speakers in Angola. The incomplete language map of Angola calls for basic research in Angolan languages
