Letter : Headquarters Department of the Missouri, Fort Leavenworth, Kas., to General Duncan S. Walker, Washington, D.C., 1867 Aug. 4
August 4, 1867, letter from Hancock to Gen. Duncan S. Walker, then a Washington, D.C., editor, defending his actions during the Kansas campaign against charges levelled by the commissioner of Indian affairs. Hancock claims that his order to burn the Pawnee Forks Cheyenne-Sioux village was retribution for prior Indian attacks, which he lists, rather than the cause of the Indian wars raging on the plains that summer. Hancock also accuses Indian agents Wynkoop and Leavenworth of collusion with trading interests, charges that the commissioner of Indian affairs knows little about Indians, and complains that the upcoming Indian peace commission would not adequately represent military interests. Supporting documents and exhibits mentioned by Hancock are lacking
