A film of the stage production of Euripides' Medea, which was performed in 1983 in Greece by the Japanese theatrical company Toho. This adaptation was staged in 1986 by Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park: ". . . [A] cross-cultural version of a seminal work of Greek tragedy. Deeply influenced by Kabuki and Noh theater, the production acts to transform Euripides into a Japanese classic. As directed by Yukio Ninagawa, the work is related to the films that Akira Kurosawa has made from Shakespeare. . . .Playing the title role, Mikijiro Hira is most decidedly the star of this all-male, highly stylized production."--New York Times
