Buffon en estampes : planches et illustrations
Album recognised as one of the rarities of nineteenth century natural history illustrations for children. The lithographed plates are by the famous French natural history illustrator Edouard Traviès. The animals and birds are depicted in realistic handcolouring but, unusually, are shown against the delicately rendered uncoloured backgrounds. Most plates feature two species with each of these double-image plates drawn on two separate lithographic stones. Each plate is accompanied by two leaves of letterpress describing each species. The species depicted include the typical and exotic from across the world. Includes three Australian native species quite accurately rendered: the kangaroo, platypus and lyre bird however the depiction of the koala is inaccurate possibly echoing Desmarest's work (1822)
