Bioelectronic vision : retina models, evaluation metrics, and system design

Drawing on their experience in several European research projects and conferences over the past few years, Portuguese scientists Martins and Sousa report on the current status of efforts to replace damaged parts of the visual system--in this case the retina--with electronic devices and systems. They establish a background for an engineering audience on the physiological constitution of the human visual system, present the different classes of computational retina models, analyze the neural activity metrics, and examine the electronic devices and circuits required to implement a bioelectronic vision system and metrics to determine how well it accomplishes its goal.
