A generalized one-dimensional fast multipole method with application to filtering of spherical harmonics

Abstract: "An algorithm is described for the rapid application to arbitrary vectors of a fairly broad class of matrices. The scheme can be viewed as a generalized (and somewhat accelerated) version of the Fast Multipole Method in one dimension. In place of multipole expansions, the new scheme uses singular value decompositions of appropriately chosen submatrices of the matrix to be applied. The scheme is applied to the uniform resolution filtering of functions on the sphere, in a modification of the recently published scheme by Jakob-Chien and Alpert. The performance of the method is illustrated with numerical examples."
