Ships and Cargoes in the Traffic Between the Baltic and Amsterdam in the Late Eighteenth Century
One of the best sources to throw light on the trade and shipping between Amsterdam and the Baltic region in the period from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century are the Sound Toll Accounts, which year after year list the ships passing Elsinore on their way to and from the Baltic. In order to illustrate the quality of the accounts this paper will give some examples of the traffic in the years from 1784 to 1795 extracted from a machine-readable edition of the accounts covering 118,933 ships movements. The data base is constructed so that it allows easy access to both individual ships and various combinations of the variables mentioned in the material
