A preface to literary analysis
This book is written for readers who want to refine their understanding of literature. Primarily, this book presents some of the distinctions and skills necessary in literary analysis. The first chapter treats the uses of literature itself, and in the three following chapters its major kinds - lyric, narrative, and drama - specifically their management of language, point of view, character, and events. Though character and plot are considered under drama, and language and point of view under narrative, each of these topics is seen as relevant to all three genres. The remaining chapters of the book attempt an introduction to "close reading", applications of the previous discussions to passages from three quite different works and, finally, expositions of the premises of literary criticism.
