A new kind of sharing : why we can't ignore global environmental change
In June 1992, world leaders met in Rio de Janeiro at the first Earth Summit. As never before, this event focused attention on the worldwide crisis in environment and development. It also accented a new polarization in world politics: the growing tension between South and North.A New Kind of Sharing examines many of the issues that were tackled in Rio and looks at their implications for Canadians. Global warming, ozone depletion, the exploitation of tropical forests, the refugee crisis, immigration policies, and the plight of our indigenous peoples: many parallels exist between conditions in the South and in Canada, reflecting our interdependence and mutual vulnerability. A New Kind of Sharing explores some of the greatest challenges facing Canada today. Canadians like all inhabitants of the industrialized North, cannot insulate themselves from global change. We are part of the problem and must be part of the solution
