Facing motherhood stressors : a content analysis of advice-giving comments using the subreddit r/breakingmom
Mothers frequently experience a considerable amount of stress as they get acquainted with the demands of parenthood. Often, mothers seek out online communities because it is potentially free from judgement and stigmatization. As a population in need of inclusion and feelings of competence, mothers may be able to use these online communities to discover advice that is sensitive to their needs. This study analyzed comments within Reddit, specifically the subreddit r/breakingmom, to determine how community members provide advice to mothers experiencing stress. Through the lens of Politeness Theory, advice comments were examined to determine the frequency in which mothers use language to save the face of inquiring mothers. Findings of this study suggest mothers respond to advice by communicating their own experiences in parenting, creating an online community of social sharing
