A radical pedagogy : teaching the interconnenctions between race and class in first-year composition
This non-traditional dissertation focuses on three areas: (1) my development as a Chicana revolutionary thinker, (2) my ongoing growth in awareness of the radical teaching methods I have implemented at Harold Washington College and Washington State University, and (3) my continual struggle to understand and transform the world through the study of theory, growing mindfulness of social transformation and interactions with students. The text analyzes what aspects of Paulo Freire's theories have been applicable in my teaching methods. The dissertation hinges on unfolding a radical pedagogy centered on the interconnections between race, racism, class, and capitalism. Through descriptive assignment objectives and outcomes, the piece attempts to elucidate some methods for engaging students in a dialectical process that will eventually lead them to become agents of social change. The text ends with a look towards possible future studies in the area of radical pedagogy that will help transform the world
