A kéznél lévő idegen : antiszemita előítéletek a mai Magyarországon
Surveys various scholarly theories regarding the phenomenon of antisemitism. Deals with the appearance of antisemitic language in Hungarian public discourse between 1990-94. Pp. 89-246 analyze the results of opinion polls conducted between 1994-2003 relating to antisemitic prejudices. They show that ca. 10% of the adult population in Hungary constitute core antisemites, 40% are prejudiced, and 50% are not antisemitic. The typical radical antisemite in Hungary lives in Budapest and belongs to the economically and educationally deprived. However, political antisemites are highly educated, and a great number of the deprived population are not antisemites. Nationalism, xenophobia, and conservatism also correlate with antisemitism. Among practicing Christians there are more antisemites than among the secular. In particular, those who attend church once a week tend to be more radically antisemitic. Examines, also, research on the relation of antisemitism to Holocaust remembrance. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)
