The Ilkhanid phase of Takht-i Sulaiman
Takht-i Sulaiman, the only well-preserved secular architectural complex from the Ilkhanid Mongol period in Iran, was built by the second Ilkhanid ruler Abaqa in the late thirteenth century on top of a Sasanian Zoroastrian sanctuary in the Azerbaijan region of Iran. It was used as a summer residence for the Il-khans and housed the treasury of Abaqa's son Arghun probably also that of Abaqa's wife Bulughan Khatun. The significance of the monument for Ilkhanid architecture can be clarified only through a comprehensive analysis of its functional, structural, and decorative aspects, based on Persian, Chinese, and other historical sources, excavated materials, and archaeological reports about other Mongol cities
