Fifty years of nuclear planning : how it started

Fifty years ago, on 6-7 April 1967, the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) held its first ministerial meeting in Washington under the chairmanship of Secretary of Defence Robert McNamara. To commemorate this important event in NATO consultationsthe current Secretary General, Stoltenberg, has compiled a book containing documents leading up to this meeting, which have not beenreleased previously. This article looks back on the origins of the Nuclear Planning Group. First, it follows the history of the NPG as described in NATO's new book. The article ends with personal reflections on the years following the creation of the NPG
