Autobiography, 1891
Typescript autobiography in seven volumes of John Whipple Potter Jenks. Jenks chronicles his time teaching in antebellum Georgia, including his observations on slavery in Georgia and his opposition to slavery; his travels in the 1840s through North Carolina, Virginia, England, Belgium, Germany, and Austria; and his 1885 journey throughout the United States. His travels through California, particularly San Francisco, are described in great detail, and he discusses his experience in Chinatown and his racist views toward the Chinese residents of San Francisco. He also records his travels in Alaska, including his experience with Native Alaskans, and his travels in Hawaii. Also noted are his travels through Yellowstone; visiting Salt Lake City and the Mormon Tabernacle; camping at Fort Lewis, Colorado, and undergoing training with an unspecified group to fight Indians; his experiences with members of the Ute and Navajo tribes; and traveling through the Rocky Mountains and Indian Territory
