Album rock : looking back through the lens of Paul-Émile Miot
Matthew Hollett (Author)
"The photograph is bizarre: a group of men painting the word ALBUM onto the face of an imposing rock located in an isolated Newfoundland cove, in an area still controlled by France . When writer Matthew Hollett encountered this photo, he was captivated and yearned to learn more. What is the back story of this image, which dated to the earliest days of photography, in the late 1850s? From where did the photographer and the men in the image come from? And could the photo reveal anything about the Newfoundland of today? This is the story of Hollett's road trip to Ship Cove, on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, to visit the rock. It is also about the photographer, Paul-Émile Miot, a French naval officer who made some of the earliest photos of Newfoundland. Hollett touches on his connection to place, the mysteries of photography, and the impact of colonialism on how we see and understand landscape. Using poetry, Hollett also dives into the minds of the four sailors in the photo and the circumstances of that day, over 150 years ago."-- Provided by publisher
