World economic and social survey 2018 : frontier technologies for sustainable development

Reviews the advances in frontier technologies - automation, robotics, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, biotechnologies, and artificial intelligence - and analyses their economic, social and environmental impact. These technologies possess immense potential for fostering growth, prospertiy, and environmental sustainability and accelerating the achievment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On the other hand, they also pose significant risks of unemployment, underemployment and exacerbating income and walth inequality and raise new ethical and moral concerns. The Survey identifies policy measure at the national level - striking a balance among economic efficienty, equity and ethical considerations - to both maximize the potential of frontier technologies and mitigate their risks. It calls for urgent efforts to bridge the technology divide that persists within and between countries. Bridgeing this gap will require Governements to play a leading role in developing human capital and establishing institutions that can nurture innovation and ensure the diffusion and adoption of technologies most needed for sustainable development
