This book is a continuation of Dawson's 'Memoirs of Hydrography'. The opening chapter, which summarizes the period from 1795 to 1884, retraces Dawson's narrative; the succeeding chapters, conforming to his scheme, embody biographical notes of four hydrographers - Wharton, Field, Purey-Cust and Parry - and on many of the distinguised, often dedicated, officers who served afloat and ashore (Dust jacket)
