First chapters deal with the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri people of the region, their relationship to the land and early interaction with settlers, explorers and sealers. Later massacres and attempts by William Thomas to engage and 'protect' Aboriginal people may have come too late. Thomas' attempts to both organise the Aboriginal people in the face of colonisation and thwart the settlers and soldiers interventions leaading to maltreatment.
