How one alumna made a difference. Cairo '94: the population conference

Litha Musyimi Ogana (WIM 16) of Kenya, an alumnus of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), built consensus on women's issues among governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). She was appointed to Kenya's delegation by Ambassador Simon A.B. Bullutt, head of the National Council on Population and Development (NCPD). Ms. Ogana worked for over a year with NCPD, NGOs, and international women's organizations to expand participation of women and NGOs at the conference. She was a co-founder of the NGO Family Life Promotion and Services with Mary Kairu (WIM 16) and a NGO representative at the 1993 and 1994 UN meetings that prepared for the conference. She contributed to developing Kenyan and African regional positions and coordinated the CEDPA-sponsored ICPD Issues Meeting in Kenya. With the assistance of Margaret Thuo (WIM 2), Louisa Owiti (WIM 11), and Jane Kirui (IB 1), she helped the government and NGOs collaborate on a country position that reflected the priorities of women. She is currently working on translating the ICPD Programme of Action into Kenyan policies and programs and has spearheaded the formation of a Kenyan network of NGOs for this purpose
