Pan-celtic nationalism at the fin de siècle : a history of the Celtic Association, 1898-1911

This dissertation is a biographical and statistical examination of the Celtic Association, a late nineteenth-century/early twentieth-century, pan-Celtic, cultural nationalist organization. The Association was contemporary of the better-known language revival and political nationalist movements in the six Celtic "nations" (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany, the Isle of Man, and Cornwall). This compilation is sui generis as a comparative historical treatment of this topic does not exist. It attempts to answer the questions of who comprised the organization, what were the aims of the Association, and what role did this society play in the development of national identity and nationalism in each respective geographic region. It also explores the role of the Celtic Association within the broader themes of pan-Celticism and places the organization within the history of pan-Celtic and antiquarian societies as well as the pan-nationalist movements of the fin de sïcle
