A global phenomenon, she embodied an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art. This groundbreaking, richly illustrated volume examines the diverse "new women" whose work profoundly marked the medium of photography from the 1920s to the 1950s. Over 120 international photographers are featured, including Lola Álvarez Bravo, Elizaveta Ignatovich, Germaine Krull, Dorothea Lange, Tsuneko Sasamoto, and Homai Vyarawalla.
