Claude Garamont : typographe de l'humanisme
Rémi Jimenès (Author), André Jammes (Writer of preface)
Classic typography par excellence, Garamond is now ubiquitous. Its myriad digital variants overwhelmingly dominate the editorial landscape, and nearly every computer on the planet has at least one font related to it. The characters in use today are inspired by the work of a modest craftsman of the sixteenth century: Claude Garamont. Character both famous and little known, born around 1515 and died in 1561, this Parisian engraver became known in his time as one of the great renovators of typography, to the point of being distinguished by François I, who made him the "king's character engraver" and gave him prestigious commissions. Based on a set of often unpublished archives, this book offers a biographical summary of Garamont's career. Through the unique journey of this modest craftsman, he sheds new light on the history of French humanism and the book in the Renaissance
