A biographical dictionary of over 10,000 "major and minor professional American artists from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries" that is the latest of several updates and revisions of a dictionary from 1926 bearing the same title. Entries consist of terse, compact statements. This title has become a standard reference for this specialized area, although concerns about factual errors have been expressed.
