"This study is a historical review of the black community of Gum Springs, and the struggle of its residents to maintain an identity and survive in Fairfax County, Virginia, from the time of George Washington to the present. Specifically, this paper is designed to (a) promote the self-esteem of black Americans, (b) engender respect for the black American experience by white Americans, (c) stimulate community awareness of the need to preserve black history and its landmarks, (d) document the history of the community for inclusion in the social studies curriculum of Fairfax County Public Schools, (e) provide historical groundwork for further research into the environs of Gum Springs, and (f) review the meanings of community in the life of its people. Data were gathered through the use of primary and secondary sources of literature and oral interviews of twenty residents of Gum Springs."--Page 1
