The battle of the narrow seas, a history of the light Coastal forces in the channel and North sea, 1939-1945

This is the history of the struggle for control of the Narrow Seas which stretch north-east and south-west from the Straits of Dover. It began in the summer of 1940 when the European ports from Bordeaux to the far north had fallen into enemy hands. For more than four years a battle went on to prevent the Germans from using coastwise shipping to relieve their roads and railways and, at the same time, to keep open our own convoy routes round the southern and eastern shores of England. A large part in this battle was played by our Motor Torpedo Boats, Motor Gunboats and Motor Launches, which are known collectively as Coastal Forces. They fought in these waters, mostly at night, against enemy convoys and their escorts over on the other side and against E boats which came across this side to attack our convoys.--From foreword
