Ambergris Caye : paradise with a past

The word Ambergris refers to a grey wax-like substance found floating in tropical seas and in the intestines of sperm whales. It is a combination of two words amber and gris, Spanish for grey. The island probably derived its name from the fact that this substance was found washed up on the island's beach after having been disposed by passing schools of whales. On a 1775 chart, the Caye is described as an island with "plenty of deer and ambergrease often found on its beach."
