Logan Campbell's Auckland : tales from the early years
While not overlooking the Maori occupation and Auckland's more recent history, this book emphasises the period between 1840 and 1912, when John Logan Campbell, the 'Father of Auckland', emerged as its most famous citizen. Only the first and last chapters, setting the scene in the past and in the present, are orthodox history. In between, a series of tales recount dramatic or significant episodes in its pioneer past. The account is not confined to the rich, the famous and the lettered. Here too are the poor immigrants, the rank and file of the armed services and the Parkhurst boy prisoners, who are presented to give a sense of the living and working conditions, and the distinctive mentality of the city's early years
