The Queen Mary Hospital Hanmer Springs, 1916-2003

This booklet tells the fascinating history of Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs. The tradition of healing began at Hanmer Springs with the discovery (for Europeans) of the the thermal pools in 1859. People came to 'take the waters' staying in hotels and private spas. Queen Mary Hospital opened as a military hospital in 1916 for returned soldiers of the Dominion from World War 1. In 1922 the Military handed over the institution to the Department of Health and was used for the treatment of Functional Nervous Disorders. In its time Queen Mary Hospital was for patients suffering alcohlism or addictions
