Authenteo in reference to women in 1 Timothy 2.12
Authenteo in 1 Timothy 2:12 is a New Testament and Septuagint hapax legomena which occurs infrequently in extra-biblical literature. The word is pivotal for understanding what it is that Paul does not allow women to do with reference to men in the church. Two different meanings have been proposed, namely, "have authority" or "domineer". The former indicates a positive or neutral concept, the latter a negative concept. Some twelve sources where the word is used are examined, two from the 1st century BC, to ascertain the basic meaning(s) of the word. The rendering of translators and the meaning given by lexicographers for these documents rather consistently point to the understanding of "have authority" and provide no basis for the idea of "domineer."
