The journal of Dr. James Schiel, covering the Gunnison-Beckwith Expedition from the Mississippi River to California during the years 1853 and 1854 as part of the federal government's program to survey likely routes for a railroad to the Pacific Coast in the 1850's. Schiel was the expedition's physician and geologist and published his journal in German in 1859
