Gerhard Richter's design for Cologne Cathedral window: blocks of 72 shades of colour, each appearing 72 times per level; a computer selected at random how the blocks should display on one half of the window and this is reflected in the other half. The book encompasses an accompanying exhibition at Museum Ludwig, showing some of the design phases and Richter's recent panel painting called "4900 Colours" which he completed during this project. The painting comprises 196 individual sections each made up of 25 small squares of variously coloured paint
