New Guinea experience : gold, war & peace

Jim Huxley
AU Author. When the author went to the New Guinea goldfields in 1940, little did he realise what adventures lay before him. He writes of the many pre-war characters met on the Wau-Bulolo gold areas. War came in 1941 and he joined the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles: men who knew the country and the ways of the native people. When the Japanese arrived on the New Guinea coast, Wau became the base for Australian commandos who harassed the enemy at every opportunity. Jim was a medical orderly near the front line much of the time - watching the action and tending the wounded. By the war's end he was an ANGAU medic. The third phase of his New Guinea Experience was in the rebuilt Lae, where he went into the newspaper business and played his part in the introduction of Rugby League to Papua and New Guinea. NGVR
