Predictive performance of current risk adjustment systems : application to pediatric populations

Risk adjustment methods can be used to adjust capitation payment rates for health status in order to equalize the expected cost of treating healthy and sick enrollees. These systems use an individual's pattern of health care utilization, or other measure of health status, to predict future expenditures. The predicted expenditures are then used to set capitation payment rates. The objective of this study was to assess the predictive performance of current claims-based adjustment methods for pediatric populations. These models were developed primarily for use in adult or elderly populations and have not been evaluated for pediatric populations
