Fundamentals of exploratory analysis of variance
The present book approaches analysis of variance (ANOVA) from an exploratory point of view, while retaining the customary least-squares fitting methods. To focus on key basic ideas and on techniques for exploration, the authors have deliberately chosen to work almost exclusively with balanced data layouts. The approach emphasizes both the individual observations and the separate parts that the analysis produces. This framework allows the usual sums of squares and mean squares to thake their proper place as summaries of the sizes of the parts of the decomposition. In practice, a variety of numerical and graphical displays often give insight into the structure of the data, such as sizes and spacing of individual effects, patterns of interactions, and behavior of the residuals. The authors provide greater flexivility and some new techiques for delving into the data. The intended audience is broad. More specifically, the exploratory approach should offer immediate benefits to researchers who apply ANOVA to data in such fields as sociology, psychology, medicine, agriculture, and engineering. It should improve their understanding of their data by augmenting their present methods with penetrating techniques (without abandoning effective methods they already use)
