The Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books ... : a catalogue

A catalogue of the Osborne Collection at Toronto Public Library which includes books, manuscripts and illustrations. Volume one contains some 3000 books covering the period between 1566 and 1910 selected from the Osborne Collection. The greater proportion of the books listed were written in the last one hundred years of the period covered, coinciding with an increase in literacy and in the production of children's books. Osborne and his first wife Mabel began collecting books they had read as children, and in time began including books published further back in time. The cut-off date of 1910 was selected because it is when Osborne turned 21. The close of the Edwardian era was chosen as the end date since it marked a natural division between children's books of bygone days and modern children's books. Volume two is made up of about 2600 entries representing books acquired after volume one was prepared for publication in 1958. Only titles not included in volume one are included in volume two. Arranged by subject reading interest of children, each section is further arranged by author or title. Included are descriptive notes, and transcriptions of title pages. The list of publishers, booksellers, and printers in volume one, appendix III gives brief biographical material. The general index includes authors, titles, series, editors and translators
