A history of the Arabs in the Sudan and some account of the people who preceded them and of the tribes inhabiting Dárfūr
"A History of the Arabs in the Sudan and Some Account of the People Who Preceded Them and of the Tribes Inhabiting Dárfūr" is a two-volume work by H. A. MacMichael, first published in 1922. MacMichael, a member of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan government from 1905 to 1933, conducted nearly two decades of ethnological research across Sudan. The book offers detailed histories of the origins, movements, and interrelations of indigenous groups in Sudan, drawing from oral histories and Sudanese genealogical records known as 'nisbas'. These records provide valuable insights into the construction and fluidity of ethnic identity at local and regional levels. Volume 1 discusses pre-Islamic and contemporary indigenous groups, while Volume 2 contains translations of nisbas with an analysis of their relation to ethnic identities. This work has been widely used as a basis for subsequent investigations concerning identity in Sudan
