An album of sixty-two heliogravure reproductions of black-and-white photographs by the Hungarian photographer Guyla Halász, known as Brassaï, documenting the haunting nocturnal world of Paris. His images of back alleys, metro stations, and bistros are ghostly in their emptiness, or populated by prostitutes, laborers, thugs, and lovers. The foreword was written by Paul Morand, novelist, diplomat, and, later, persona non grata for his collaboration with the Vichy government
