Sylvia Scarlett, disguised as a young man, and her ne'er-do-well father flee France for England when he commits larceny. They join forces with the cockney Monkley in petty swindles and then form a traveling show. When Sylvia becomes attracted to Michael, an artist, and her father is abandoned by his new love, their fragile world collapses. In the end, Sylvia and Michael recognize their love for each other
