Hugh Kennedy's book is an account of the political history of Muslim Spain and Portugal from the arrival of the Arabs from North Africa in 711, through to the fall of the last Muslim state, Granada, in 1492. It provides comprehensive coverage of political events across those parts of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule, setting them in the context of both the wider Muslim world and of contemporary Christendom. It also goes behind those events to explain the political structures which influenced and determined the actions of rulers and the effectiveness of their armies.
