This book explores the history and influence of ordinary women in the bush and in country towns during the 20th century in Australia. It looks at how women set up and ran a home, describes their techniques for preparing and preserving food, and their methods of coping during hard times. It describes how they provided for their own household needs, such as by making soap and candles; developed treatments for common ailments; and more. It also looks at work they did outside the home such as shearing, dairying, droving, and teaching. It includes stories of Chinese, Indian, German and Cornish women, as well as Islander and Aboriginal women
