French opera at the fin de siècle : Wagnerism, nationalism, and style

This is the first book-length study of the rich operatic repertory written and performed in France during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. Huebner identifies a number of key works in the period - by such figures as Jules Massenet, Camille Saint-Saens, Edouard Lalo, Emmanuel Chabrier, Ernest Chausson, and Gustave Charpentier - and sets them in the context of each composer's career. The study will serve as a valuable source for the literary background and early reception history of operas ranging from Massenet's Manon (1884) to Charpentier's Louise (1900)
