Communist terror in Romania : Gheorghiu-Dej and the Police State, 1948-1965
"Historical inquiry into the years of Communist rule in Romania has mostly concentrated on the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) as an institution, and on Nicolae Ceausescu, who became a well-known figure internationally. Little attention has been given to his predecessor Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, who built up and maintained the Communist system between 1944 and 1965. Thus the generally received picture of Romania's Communist years has been incomplete." "This book focuses on Dej's rise to prominence and the purges by which it was achieved. As with Dennis Deletant's study Ceausescu and the Securitate (1995), on the 1965-89 period, the Securitate files have provided much of the evidence."
