The biography of the Kentucky statesman who served in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as Speaker of the House. A skilled orator, lawyer, and politician, Clay served as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams and founded the Whig Party. "The Great Compromiser" brokered important agreements on slavery during the lead up to the Civil War. As part of the "Great Triumvirate" with colleagues Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, he was instrumental in the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Compromise Tariff of 1833, and the Compromise of 1850
