Book dynamics! : Ed Hutchins turns, twists, & topples tradition
Edward H. Hutchins (Author), Joan Alden (Editor)
"I love making books. Visual books. Artist books. Books that explore the relationship between the message sent and the physical structure that delivers it. I try to match a unique point of view with an appropriate non-standard structure created out of non-traditional materials--rubber stamps, macaroni type, flash bulb impressions, cut-stencil designs, molded pages, found objects and industrial scraps. On occasion I make one-of-a-kind books, but I much prefer making multiple copies. Editions appeal to me for many reasons. First, if on book looks great, then a dozen, lined up next to each other, looks ever better. When you make one book, you make a product when you make an edition you explore the process. The learning--the doing and doing and doing it again--is built in. There is a delicious challenge to streamline and simplify production and to maximize limited materials. But the best part of making many copies is that you can sell, trade and share your work and still have at least one copy left for yourself. Enjoy my books. Perhaps they will provoke or amuse. Perhaps they will challenge the traditional concept of what constitutes a book. Perhaps they will stimulate a sense of amusement. Most of all, I hope they will give you ideas for making your own books."--book jacket
