Tradition and transmission : Bantu, Indo-European, and circumpolar great traditions
Author consummates lifetime of individualist anthropology in study of Great Tradition concept for explaining central aspects of many societies, particularly of apparent (Kikuyu, Saami) or would-be (Norwegian) egalitarian ones. He discusses cultural traditions in general, Indo-European and Saami cultural traditions, with examples of similar myths from different racial sources. He detects common circumpolar tradition of enchantment, particularly in Eurasia, and discusses shamanism there. He evaluates work of Dumezil, Gimbutas, Bloch and Veblen. Coastal Saami at Nesseby (Unjárgga), where he did fieldwork, give example of tradition, clear but not assertive cultural distinctiveness and adaptability to modern life and travel opportunities.
