Early Wellington churches

What is meant by a history of early Wellington churches? It could mean a history of the buildings or their architectural style. It could mean the men who designed and built them, the men who worked in them and it could include either just the old churches or those that continue the work of the old and stand as their descendants. Charles Fearnley in attempting to write this history has considered all these aspects, as well as the place of the Church in the community, the inter-relation between churches and at times a look at the history of the sect or denomination to which a particular building belongs. But although as an architect and a photographer, he finds the physical form of the buildings of great interest, the church really concerns people, and its records become social documents, telling us much about people and the way they thought and acted in past days. Humorous incidents have always occurred and it is to be hoped that they always will, but these are related, not with scorn or ridicule but with an appreciation of their quality as a part of the human side of the history of early Wellington churches
